Topic 2

So I'm stretching way back to topic two because I totally forgot about it.Oh well atleast its an open topic.I cant remember what was going on back in wek # so I'll just talk about something more recent. So today actually, a kid in my class brought in his new iPad 2 and its white. I know its nothing big but It looks soooo m uch cooler than the black one.It seems more modern and sophisticated to me. It's funny how going from black to white can do that. Maybe its just me but thats how i felt about it when I saw it. It's pretty cool so go online and check it out if you havnt already seen it.

Ok, So I am totally ready for summer and have a pretty project I want to do. I recently came across an old vintage 3 speed bicycle and it is in pretty rough shape. Everything still works on it just fine though. So I want to re-store it and I was doing some research and it wont cost a hole lot but it will take a lot of man hrs. Anyway I have to take it all apart and polish up the chrome but the part im excited about is re- painting it. should be fun and i am excited.

PhotoShop Brushes! I have collected a pretty killer set of water color brushes for photoshop and they can create some really sweet image effects. If you ever want to try it just know that you have to create a lot of layers and will have to mess with opacity a lot but looks totally cool. Give it a try. You will enjoy

Ok so I think I'll give out a little photo shop secret. So if you find an image off of google or whatever and you would like to use it in one of your own works but aren't sure about copyright laws or whatever here is what you can do. In photo shop if you have the image, go ahead and grab the smudge tool. If you make it a small brush size and begin to go back and forth with the curves and lines of the image you can achieve some cool painterly effects. Then you can go in and select different color ranges and change them or tweak them to make the piece your own. This technique takes a little bit of practice but it is worth the effort.

So just a fun little design tid bit here. My girlfriend is in art ed at Kent and she recently did an art plan with the kids that looks cool and its fun, easy and messy, so naturally I was attracted to it. Basically you just take different water colors and shaving cream and dump it all into a big pile and start to twirl it and swish it every which way and the end result is a pretty cool marble looking texture. Its fun and inexpensive so if you're ever board over the summer go ahead and give it a shot.

So i was recently at boarders and I was looking through some of the art books and i came accross a really cool one on how to present your portfolio. It interesting and educational and gave me some cool ideas on how present mine when the time comes. Boarders has alot of sweet books like that and i recommend going to check some of them out.

The Collider show was really cool. I really liked the piece with the interactive video of the red person hanging by strings. It was neet how the video would change depending on how many people were in the room and where they were standing. It gave me an un-easy feeling but I guess that means that it was effective as an interactive piece.

Topic 7

So going off of my last post about visiting my friends in Columbus, my other friend is caricature artist. Now anyone that has an illustrator for a friend knows that they pretty much freelance for their entire professional life because theirs not really a full time position needed for illustrators at an ad and graph firm or whatever. So we were talking about how learning the business aspect of what we do is such a big part that schools don't really tell you about. The negotiating with clients and having to fend for yourself against other artists who are trying to get the job. It was very interesting because it's an entirely different part of what we do for a living. You have to be assertive and sometimes a huge a$$hole to get where you want to be in this competitive field. Anyways his website is www.robhren.com....check it out, he does some really cool stuff.

So I recently made a visit to see some friends in Columbus who are both artists. The one works for Blue Diesel in Columbus as a web designer and we got to talking about good ways to network. He told me that he landed his current job and just interviewed for another one all because he has an account on LinkedIn.com. For those of you that are not familiar with this site it is a social networking site for business professionals and freelance workers of any sort. I highly recommend everyone sign up for a free account and start networking. It definitely pays off.

http://www.chrisjockey.com/english/home.html....... This guys portfolio is really cool. It's done in Flash but the home page has some really nice animation. He doesn't use pages but has the home page shift up and down and left and right when you click on a link and some more info and artwork pops up. I like this site because I want to try and incorporate some flash banners in my portfolio site if I can figure out how to do it. Anyways check it out, its worth taking a look at.

http://layersmagazine.com/illustrator-design-goldensection.html....this is a link that helps explain what the golden circle is and how to make it for any designer that is struggling on a good composition for a project.

TOPIC 4

I liked the part about only having so many fonts to work with on the web and how people cry about it. I agree with what the article said about how we need to take the fonts available and use our skills as designers to make them them look nice. We will not always have everything that we want as designers at our disposal so we need to learn how to take what we have and make it interesting and cool while still holding its readability. This is why we are creatives and why not everybody can do what we do.

so I have some catching up to do on my blog posts. I'm sure all of you avid coffee drinkers have already noticed but a few months ago Starbucks Coffee launched their new logo design. It is just the mermaid now with a white background and they even dropped their name out of the logo. I don't know if it was a smart choice but at the least it looks cool.

History of the Internet

Everything began in 1957 when a remote connection allowed programmers to work directly with the computer. Before this computers worked only in batch processing. Later in 1966 DARPA set up ARPENET, which allowed information to be passed from computer to computer. This led to IMP Subnet, which gave them control of network activity, and packet switching was born. From there, NCP was created and then turned into TCP, which was a verification of file transfers. Furthermore, Suclates created fewer nodes, which allowed for focus on communication with other networks and the Internet was born. Computers were just a transfer node, which provided a direct connection to the receiver and end-to-end structure. DARPA connected computers through gateways and OSI standardized networks from its ends and the channels divisions into separate layers. Then the TCPIP protocol came out which was a standard that guaranteed compatibility between networks and merged them creating the Internet. In 1990 the ARPANET hardware was removed but the Internet was up and running.
